Extras cover

A ‘benefit’ is the maximum amount you can get back for each service covered by your Extras plan. This means that for every service included in your Extras cover, there’s a limit on what you can claim back after receiving that service.

Most Extras services have annual limits, meaning there's a maximum amount you can get back from nib each year for certain services. For example, if your annual limit for Optical is $300, you can claim up to that amount for optical visits and treatments within the year. Once you reach this limit, you’ll need to wait until the next year to start claiming again.

A waiting period is the time you need to wait after purchasing or upgrading your cover before you can start claiming for the services included. During the waiting period, you won’t be able to make any claims for the services included in your new cover. However, if you’re switching from another provider and have already completed your waiting periods, you can start claiming for these services right away.

Extras cover alone won’t help you avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) or Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading. To avoid these costs, you need to have a suitable level of Hospital cover. Learn more about the MLS and LHC.

Yes, you can choose to have Extras-only cover or Hospital-only over. With nib, you can also combine both for a more comprehensive plan.

For instance, if you’re young and healthy, you might opt for just Extras cover to access services like dental and physiotherapy without needing Hospital cover. On the other hand, if you have specific health needs or want to ensure you’re covered for hospital stays, you might choose just Hospital cover. Combining both would be a great option if you want full coverage, giving you peace of mind for being covered in hospital and additional treatments like optical care or remedial massage.
