Explaining nib Extras cover: What is it and how you can benefit?

Your body is a complex machine and it takes more than the occasional trip to your GP to keep it in tip-top shape.  

We understand that everyone’s got different health needs, and that’s why we offer a range of Extras covers. This can help you pay for visits to professionals that keep you and your family healthy. Plus, our range of options allows you to choose the Extras that are right for where you’re at in life. We’re going to explore some of the healthcare services we cover with most of our Extras policies. 

Emergency ambulance cover 

Most of our nib Extras covers offer unlimited emergency ambulance1 excluding members covered by state ambulance schemes.

Preventative dental 

Keep smiling and save money with nib Extras dental cover. If you have an nib Extras policy, you can get up to 100% back on dental check-ups at participating providers,2 including services like  exams, cleanings and fluoride treatments – subject to your annual and service limits Don’t forget to check your nib account before booking to confirm your cover.  

General dental 

Need a filling, basic extraction or x-ray? That’s where nib’s general dental comes in. By visiting a dentist in our First Choice network, you can pay agreed rates* on common dental treatments. Now that’s something to smile about! If you want to make the most of your Extras, then search for a local dentist in our network using our find a provider tool

Major dental and orthodontics 

If you’re on an eligible Extras policy, we can cover the costs for some of your major dental procedures. So if you need a crown or bridge, a tooth removed, or dentures, it’s a smart idea to check your cover. Or if you need help getting a perfect, straight smile, we have Extra options that cover braces and plates. 

Optical cover 

Ready to have your eyes checked or get a new pair of specs? nib Extras can help cover the costs of eye tests, prescription glasses and contact lenses. Check out the nib First Choice Optical network to find a local optometrist who can deliver quality care and value for money. We’ve partnered with Specsavers, OPSM, Bailey Nelson and more to give you the optical care you need. 

Physiotherapy 

Physios can help relieve pain and restore strength in your muscles. They can also help you regain your range of motion for certain body parts. Physios in our First Choice network can provide tailored services to nib Extras members at agreed rates*, and you could get up to 100% back on your initial consultation^. 

Chiropractic and osteopathy 

If a trip to the chiro or osteo is on the cards, then nib Extras cover can pay benefits for your appointment. This means you can treat your pain at a lower cost and get you back on track towards good health in no time. 

Healthy living 

Services for a healthy lifestyle 

With the right cover, we can cover some of the costs for services that'll help you have a healthier lifestyle. This includes your gym membership, personal training and weight management programs.  

Dietary advice 

Want to level up your meal planning and healthy cooking? A dietitian or a nutritionist can teach you how to cook healthy, nutrient dense meals at home. And if you’re a vegetarian or want to lose weight, then a dietitian or nutritionist can point you in the right direction. 

Psychology 

It’s not just our physical health we need to look after – taking care of our mental health is just as important. A psychologist can help you understand what’s going on in your life and offer support. They can also teach you strategies to navigate what you’re going through. Search our First Choice mental health network to find a provider near you. 

How can you claim nib Extras? 

You can use your online member account or the nib App to claim your Extras cover. But it’s important to check your: 

  • Policy to make sure you’re covered 

  • ‘My Extras’ usage to see your limits 

  • Receipts to make sure each service is itemised.

Not available to: (i) QLD residents who have ambulance services provided by their State ambulance schemes; (ii) TAS residents who are covered under state ambulance schemes in TAS and when travelling in mainland Australia except SA and QLD; or (iii) pension and health care card holders who have ambulance services provided by State ambulance schemes (check entitlements with Centrelink if unsure). 

  2. Payment of dental benefits by nib  is subject to serving relevant waiting periods, annual limits and service limits. Check your cover by visiting your member account or call 13 16 42. The dental check-up covers an examination or consultation (011 to 015), diagnostics (022, 037) scale and clean (114, 115) or removal of plaque (111), fluoride treatment (121) as deemed necessary and appropriate in the clinical opinion of the dentist (dentures not included). The services provided will be deducted from your annual limits and/or service limits. The No Gap offer is not to be used in conjunction with any other offer or government scheme, nor substitutable or redeemable for cash and is only available with dentists who have a No Gap First Choice network provider agreement with nib. 

  3. *nib First Choice providers (i.e. our network) offer competitive fees for many commonly claimed treatments and consultations. These fees are reviewed at least annually and are subject to change. Always check nib.com.au/health-services/find-a-provider before booking to see if your provider participates or simply ask your provider if they are part of nib’s network at the time of booking. Providers occasionally leave the nib First Choice network so it’s important to check before booking to avoid disappointment. Annual limits, waiting periods and T&Cs apply.
