Yes, we can offer automatic cover for more than 40 existing medical conditions, provided that you satisfy the criteria for that condition. If your condition is not automatically covered, you can apply for cover before or at the time you buy your policy. In many cases, we expect we'll be able to offer you cover for your existing medical condition for an additional premium. T&Cs apply.
Yes, you can purchase a policy after leaving your home in Australia, however there is a 72-hour waiting period for all policies purchased while travelling. If you purchase while you're travelling, you must purchase cover up to the date you will return to your home in Australia – we can't cover you for the middle of a trip.
Need to make a claim? To submit a claim online simply follow these instructions:
Upload your supporting documents to the digital claim form
Submit your claim and our team will be in contact.
We may request evidence supporting your claim such as clinical notes or a written medical report or summary from your treating doctor or dentist overseas which clearly explains the medical condition, the diagnosis provided, medical tests requested, and treatment given.
We may also require a medical certificate from your local GP, specialist or dentist. Try to obtain as much documentation as possible at the time of the event, as it can be difficult to obtain some documents once you return to Australia.
As an nib customer the first thing to be aware of is that a travel delay must be at least six hours to meet the criteria for all nib policies. If you know you’ll be stuck at the airport for more than six hours you should contact the airline carrier or tour operator in the first instance to seek a refund, credit, or some form of financial compensation or arrangement specific to your needs.
If you've already tried logging into the app or your member account and haven't been able to use complete the digital claim form, contact us for help.
nib travel insurance may cover you if you need emergency medical evacuation or repatriation while overseas due to illness or injury, with approval from us. Coverage may include:
Transport and accommodation to return home or a suitable medical facility
Return you to your home in Australia with a medical attendant; or
Pay for a return economy class airfare, reasonable accommodation and additional expenses for a friend or relative to fly to, remain with and escort you in place of a medical attendant
Transport of remains to Australia in the event of death.
Important: Coverage only applies if evacuation/repatriation is medically necessary and approved by us. Our policies do not cover existing medical conditions except automatically covered conditions or as specified medical conditions for the relevant additional premium, and our policies do not cover medical expenses in Australia.
Tips in the event of a travel insurance claim
Always get our approval before evacuation.
Keep medical documentation ready. For example, original medical receipts, treating doctors report, hospital admission and discharge reports where relevant.
The Australian government has Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Italy, Belgium, Malta, Slovenia and Norway.
These agreements mean: Australian residents can get help with the cost of essential medical treatment when visiting these countries.
The RHCA is only available when getting medical attention for public health services, any private hospital services will not be covered by the RHCA.
Important: RHCAs are not a substitute for international travel insurance. You should consider travel insurance that may cover medical services not covered by the RHCA.
