Finding the perfect fit
nib’s First Choice Psychology network includes ‘no gap’ sessions for nib customers to find the right psychologist
nib has partnered with My Mirror to become the first health insurer in Australia to offer customers the opportunity to better match with a preferred psychologist.
Through My Mirror, an online telehealth psychology provider, nib customers have the ability to connect with psychologists who best suit their needs through a combination of an AI informed questionnaire, and three initial no-gap consultations to explore which psychologist may be the right fit as part of nib’s First Choice network.
Last financial year, nearly 3,000 nib customers were admitted to hospital for a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety, which may have been treated through psychology support in the early stages of a mental illness. Of these admissions, 88% had no previous engagement with a psychologist.
Australian-founded My Mirror is one of the country’s leading online psychology providers, that has supported more than 30,000 people through more than 100,000 sessions providing fast, seamless access to mental health practitioners, along with a guided pathway to help them choose the right clinician.
Mental health care remains one of Australia’s most pressing public health issues, with nearly half (42.9%) of all people in Australia having experienced a mental health condition in their lifetime¹,
said nib Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ed Close.
“This partnership marks a major step forward in nib’s commitment to improving mental health outcomes, particularly for nib customers experiencing mild to moderate mental health challenges.”
The My Mirror and nib partnership uses a two-part health care approach to finding a psychologist and getting access to appointments. My Mirror, accessed via the nib app, helps identify which psychologist might be the best fit for the individual and avoids expensive trials, which may lead to people who need help giving up.
nib customers who have psychology included in their extras cover can access up to three no-gap short consultations with different matched psychologists from My Mirror to help find the right psychologist before committing to treatment.
The Australian Psychological Society shared 27% of psychologists report clients waiting a month for an appointment, while 15% say the wait stretches to nearly two months². To help close this gap, appointments with telehealth platforms such as My Mirror can be arranged within 24-48 hours anywhere within Australia.
My Mirror works with more than 100 registered psychologists with same day or next day appointments ensuring nib customers can book the right psychologist at a time that suits them. The partnership between nib and My Mirror also ensures members can claim for their consultations directly with the provider, avoiding unnecessary out of pocket payments and delays in claiming.
“Navigating mental health support can be daunting,” Mr Close said. “Our aim is to make it easier for our customers to connect and stick with a psychologist who suits their needs early in their treatment. This is about leading with empathy, investing in smarter solutions, and helping Australians achieve better health outcomes through timely, personalised support.”
CEO of My Mirror, Josh Liwszyc said: “At My Mirror, we’re committed to making quality mental health care more accessible, affordable, and seamless. We’re proud to partner with nib.”
The initiative is part of nib’s broader expansion of its mental health offering, which includes First Choice Telehealth Psychology and Digital CBT (internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy). These services target common mental health concerns such as social anxiety, OCD, and perinatal mental health.
