Assigning levels if authority to your policy
What is authority?
Each health cover has a nominated policyholder. They are legally responsible for the policy, and anything we send will be addressed to them. You can choose to give any person (as listed on your policy, or a third party) permission to act on your behalf, within a specific range of responsibilities that is based on the type of authority that has been granted. At nib, we have two types of authority that policyholders can grant to people listed on their policy – authority to operate and authority to enquire.
Authority to operate is normally given to a spouse or partner and allows them to complete most, but not all, actions relating to your policy including:
Changing names and contact details of people on the policy
Changing preferred method of contact
Updating or changing privacy details
Changing cover
Updating dependant details including adding or removing dependants from the policy
Checking eligibility for a Hospital or Extras procedure claim
Lodging a claim
Ordering a new nib card
Requesting statements for anyone on the policy
Making a manual payment
Removing their own payment details
Enquiring about the policy
Removing their authority at any time.
Granting someone authority to enquire allows them to discuss specific information about the policy and make changes related to themselves. People with authority to enquire can:
Change their own name or contact details
Remove themselves from the policy
Lodge a claim
Check eligibility for a Hospital or Extras procedure claim
Enquire about policy details such as remaining benefits or claims history.
For privacy reasons, you cannot currently change your name in your member account or through the nib App. Please contact us, opens in a new tab if you need to change your name.
Currently, you cannot update third-party authority and policyholders through your member account or in the nib App (we promise we’re working on it!). Please contact us, opens in a new tab if you'd like to update third-party authority or add or remove policyholders.

Losing a loved one can be overwhelming. There are often official matters to attend to and paperwork that needs to be taken care of during an extremely emotional time.
We want to make this part as easy as possible. If you’re the executor of the policy, you can contact us, opens in a new tab to advise of the death of a member for an immediate update. The executor will be the only person authorised to make this change to the cover.
If you’re a relative or a friend of a member who has passed away, we can help you based on your individual circumstances.
If you are a family member hoping to operate the policy on behalf of someone undergoing palliative care, extra documentation is required for Power of Attorney and Enduring Power of Attorney. Contact us, opens in a new tab for more information.
