With over 1.3 million Australians choosing a cruise holiday in 2024, cruising has become a popular holiday choice. But what about the 5 million Australians with accessibility needs? For these travellers, cruising is becoming increasingly inclusive as cruise lines enhance their facilities and services to accommodate diverse needs.

Whether you're a traveller who uses mobility aids, has sensory sensitivities, or requires specific accessibility features, planning ahead can make all the difference between a disappointing experience and a comfortable, memorable holiday.

Best cruise lines for accessible travel

Cruise lines with accessible cabins are increasingly easy to come by and are making it easier for guests to travel -however some cruise lines still come out ahead with their accessible facilities and services.

Royal Caribbean

When it comes to wheelchair accessible cruises, this line is ahead of the game. Royal Caribbean offer spacious corridors for wheelchair turns, along with accessible cabins and automatic doors opening out to most decks. Service dogs are also welcome.

Norwegian Cruise Line

With pool lifts available on all vessels and a specialised service on embarkation day to ensure your needs will be met during your cruise holiday, Norwegian Cruise Line are a standout option.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises are committed to inclusive travel - from carefully designed staterooms to braille signage, there’s attention to detail on all levels. Like Royal Caribbean, service dogs are also welcome on board.

Booking accessible cruises

Cruising holidays are more popular than ever, so booking early is essential, especially if you need an accessible cabin. Royal Caribbean says the best time to book a cruise is 6-12 months in advance, calling it the ‘sweet spot’ for most travellers. But with limited accessible cabin availability on every cruise ship, booking well in advance to secure a cabin is even more important — particularly if you have a specific cruise ship or destination in mind.

Ocean vs river cruising

Ocean cruises generally offer more accessibility features than river cruises. As a general rule, the larger the ship, the more accessible it’s likely to be - as larger ships typically have more space for accessible cabins, elevators and ramps. That said, some newer river cruise ships are able to accommodate with some limitation, though their smaller size can limit overall accessibility compared to ocean cruises. Always check with the cruise operator for details before booking.

Mobility and assistance services

Most major cruise lines provide various forms of mobility assistance, including wheelchair rentals and priority boarding, as well as accessible tender services at some ports where small boat transfers are required. Some services have limited availability and need advance arrangement. If you use mobility aids or require assistance, notify the cruise line early and confirm what equipment you can bring onboard.

Researching accessibility in advance is key; major operators, like Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises, offer curated accessible shore excursions featuring mobility-friendly transport and trained staff, often providing more comprehensive options than independent tour companies.

Communication and documentation

Cruise staff are trained to help make the experience as seamless as possible. It's a good idea to contact the cruise line early to share any specific requirements, and to carry copies of relevant medical documents and pre-arranged accessibility plans to help ensure your needs are met throughout the journey.

Cruise excursions for wheelchair users

Many cruise lines offer shore excursions designed to accommodate wheelchair users, making it easier to explore ports of call with confidence. It might also be possible to arrange private, customised excursions with local tour operators, which can provide greater flexibility than joining a group tour.
