OzHarvest Perth reaches major milestone

The OzHarvest WA team is celebrating a major milestone, with the local food rescue organisation providing the equivalent of 500,000 meals to disadvantaged West Australian residents since its establishment in late 2014.

The service is now in full swing and on average 1,000 kilograms of quality food is rescued each day from supermarkets, clubs, restaurants and function centres from across Perth and provided to local service agencies.

OzHarvest's WA State Manager Jennifer Keen said that while milestone is a fantastic achievement for the organisation, which has been in operation for less than a year, the demand for the service continues to grow.

"This is a great result for our Perth program but with more than 8,000 residents seeking food relief each month there is ever increasing demand for food relief in the state," Ms Keen said.

"Thanks to a recent $150,000 grant from nib foundation, we will now be able to expand our reach while also ensuring the sustainability of the program for many years to come and in 2016 we aim to reach one million meals!"

nib foundation Executive Officer, Amy Tribe, said the foundation is proud to support such an important charity that is making a real difference to the lives of those less fortunate.

"The OzHarvest program has an incredible on-reach. Not only does it increase food security for the most disadvantaged and vulnerable members of our community, and deliver environmental outcomes by diverting food waste from landfill, it also enables charities to reduce their food budget and redirect this funding to other vital needs such as education and rehabilitation programs," Ms Tribe said.

"Our funding will assist with the employment of key staff, including an additional food rescue driver, to increase the capacity of the Perth program, plus add new areas to the program like Perth's southern corridor, which is seeing increased demand."

OzHarvest is now seeking potential food donors in the Perth area, such as supermarkets, restaurants, catering companies, function centres and registered clubs. For more information about the program or to get involved please call 6500 6450 or email [email protected].
