What is the Government's Hearing Services Program?
This program is an Australian Government initiative that helps make hearing care more affordable for eligible Australians. It provides up to $1,600 in support for a full hearing assessment and hearing devices.
If you’re eligible, you can also combine this subsidy with your Extras benefits, which may let you access lower or No Gap offers, up to your annual limit.
Members can claim one pair of hearing aids every five years. Any remaining annual limits during that time can be used for repairs to help keep your hearing aids working at their best.
What are the benefits of using nib First Choice hearing?
No, hearing tests aren’t covered under nib Extras - only hearing aids, repairs and adjustments are included.
However, some Australians may be eligible for the Government's Hearing Services Program that can help cover the cost of hearing tests.
It’s completely up to you whether you upgrade to an Extras cover that includes hearing aids. If you do, it could mean lower or No Gap offers and might help you save significantly on hearing aids.
Keep in mind that waiting periods may apply before you can claim benefits, so it’s worth checking the details before making changes to your cover.
An audiologist is a hearing specialist who tests your hearing, provides advice and recommends or fits hearing aids. They are different from ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctors, who treat ear infections, perform surgery and diagnose medical conditions affecting your ears.
Medicare generally doesn’t cover standard hearing aids for adults. However, some Australians may be eligible for the Government Hearing Services Program that helps make hearing care more affordable.
If you’re eligible, you may also be able to access lower or No Gap offers when combined with the Government Hearing Services Program. All members can also enjoy member discounts on a selected range of hearing aids.
During a hearing test, one of our First Choice hearing providers will assess how well you hear different sounds, pitches and volumes. You’ll wear headphones while each ear is tested and you’ll be asked to respond when you hear a sound. They may also look inside your ears and ask about your hearing history to better understand your hearing needs.
It’s generally recommended to have a hearing check at least once every one to two years, or sooner if you notice any hearing issues. This can include ringing in your ears or difficulty hearing sounds.
Hearing aids amplify sounds so you can hear more clearly. They pick up sounds from your environment, process and adjust them and then send clearer sounds into your ears. This helps make every day listening easier.
