nib Game Changer returns, putting inclusion centre stage

The Trainer Group Foundation and nib will once again bring people together at McDonald Jones Stadium for an event focused on inclusion, connection and care, as participants in the 2026 Game Changer all-abilities program return during the half-time break at the Newcastle Knights vs Dolphins game on Sunday, 5 July.   

The Game Changer program is a five-week wellbeing education program. Designed to build confidence, the program brings together players, families and community partners to show how sport can create opportunities for people of all abilities to feel empowered and contribute within their wider community. 

Delivered in partnership with The Trainer Group Foundation and The Newcastle Knights, the program is made possible by health insurer nib, whose head office is based in Newcastle and whose investment reflects a commitment to the Hunter community. 

It’s about fun, connection and being part of your community and that’s something everyone should have the opportunity to experience.

nib Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ed Close said the program reflects nib’s commitment to improving health and wellbeing through community-led initiatives. 

“The Game Changer all-abilities program is an unforgettable experience to witness. Being part of a team, running onto an iconic field and being cheered on by thousands of fans with your NRL heroes by your side,” Mr Close said. “It’s about fun, connection and being part of your community and that’s something everyone should have the opportunity to experience.” 

“Working alongside The Trainer Group Foundation, our aim is to create opportunities that extend well beyond match day and support better wellbeing for participants and their families,” Mr Close said.  

The Trainer Group Foundation, led by co-Founders David Prentice and NRLW player Millie Elliott, play a central role in delivering the program, drawing on lived experience and a focus on long-term inclusion. 

“This is about opportunity, and community,” Ms Elliott said. “We see participants grow in confidence each week, making friends, trying new things and being part of a team environment.” 

This year’s program will be supported by current Newcastle Knights NRLW stars Botille “Bo” Vette-Welsh and Shanice Parker who are taking on coaching roles for the Game Changer teams. 

Their involvement reflects the Newcastle Knights broader commitment to inclusion with players stepping beyond competition to support participants directly, helping build confidence and connection in a team environment. 

The impact is reflected in the experiences of local families who take part. One Newcastle mother, Lurene who joined the program with her son, Rafe, said the opportunity to participate in a team environment has been transformative. 

“For a long time, we struggled to find something where my son felt he truly belonged,” she said. “Being part of Game Changer has given Rafe confidence and connection, and as a parent, seeing him included like that means everything. We are incredibly grateful to nib and the Trainer Group.” 

Through its partnership with the Newcastle Knights and The Trainer Group Foundation, nib continues to support initiatives that go beyond traditional health care, focusing on prevention, participation and community impact.

Mr Close said the initiative demonstrates the value of long-term partnerships, grounded in community need.
