8 ways to treat yourself on a budget

Life moves fast. Between juggling work, family, friends, and the never-ending to-do list, it’s easy to put yourself at the bottom of the priority pile. But taking care of yourself doesn’t have to mean splurging on expensive retreats or luxury skincare. Sometimes, the best kind of self-care is the simple kind, that feels good and doesn’t leave your bank account wincing.

So, if you’re overdue for a little TLC but trying to keep things affordable, here are eight easy and budget-friendly ways to treat yourself.

1. DIY spa day

You don’t need to book into a fancy day spa to feel pampered. Light a candle, play your favourite playlist and run a warm bath (bubble bath or Epsom salts if you’ve got them). Pop on a face mask (store-bought or homemade from ingredients like honey, oats, or avocado) and give yourself a mani-pedi while you’re at it. Visit nib Rewards for offers and discounts on health and beauty brands, to make your at-home spa day extra luxe. You’d be surprised how far a little bit of at-home luxury can go when it comes to resetting your mood.

2. Check out free events in your area

Your local community is probably buzzing with free or low-cost events, you just need to know where to look. Think outdoor markets, art exhibitions, park yoga, or live music. Whether you go solo or bring a mate, getting out and doing something different (without spending much) can be a great way to recharge and reconnect with your surroundings. You can start by checking your local council website or searching for free events in your area.

3. Unplug and unwind

We’re all guilty of the mindless scroll. But putting your phone on aeroplane mode for an hour or two can work wonders. Read a book, do a crossword, or just sit and listen to the sounds around you. Giving your brain a break from notifications and screens helps dial down the stress and bring a bit of calm back into your day.

4. Cook something special

Cooking doesn’t have to feel like a chore, especially when you’re doing it just for the joy of it. Whip up your favourite comfort meal or try that recipe you’ve had saved for ages. Light a candle, set the table nicely and eat without distractions. It’s amazing how good a home-cooked meal can make you feel, especially when it’s made with love (and maybe a little butter). 5. Move your body

You don’t have to run a marathon to get those feel-good endorphins going. A gentle walk, a YouTube yoga class, or even a solo dance party in your living room all count. Moving your body is a powerful mood booster, and the best part? It’s completely free. Bonus points if you can get outside and soak up a bit of sunshine while you’re at it.

6. Deep clean

It might not sound like self-care, but hear us out. There’s something incredibly satisfying about scrubbing, decluttering, and making your space feel fresh again. Put on some music, set a timer for 20 minutes, and see how much you can tackle. You’ll not only feel productive, but you’ll also be giving yourself a more peaceful environment to unwind in later.

7. Practice mindfulness or meditation

You don’t need incense or a Himalayan singing bowl to try mindfulness. Sit somewhere comfy, close your eyes, and focus on your breath for a few minutes. Notice how your body feels. If your mind wanders, that’s okay, just gently bring it back.

You’ll find a wide range of free meditation apps and videos online if you’re interested in trying a guided version. Even a short session can help bring a sense of calm to a busy day.

8. Call a friend for a chat

Sometimes, the best self-care is just having a yarn with someone who gets you. Give a friend or family member a ring, no agenda, just a check-in. Laugh, vent, reminisce. A good chat can lift your spirits and remind you that you’re not alone, even when life feels a bit overwhelming.
