In 2018, we ate science-backed superfoods, drank turmeric lattes, burnt calories through HIIT training, focused on our gut health and monitored everything from stress levels to sleep. So, which trends are here to stay and what can we expect to see more of in 2019?
We don’t have a crystal ball handy, so we asked a variety of experts for their top predictions on the health, wellbeing and nutrition trends that will be making headlines this year. Only time will tell if they’re on the money…
Long hours spent at a computer, busy being busy, juggling work and family commitments… Most of us are time poor, stressed out and tired. The focus for 2019 will be convenience, and simplicity will be key. Work out where you want to, when you want to. Short, sharp bodyweight workouts offering long-term goals. Easy to follow nutrition plans with few ingredients. A simple formula for a balanced lifestyle.
We’ve started to be more conscious about what we put inside us with plant-based diets being all the rage in 2018. Next year the trend will shift and bring more attention to the harmful chemicals that we are putting on our skin daily and breathing in from products we use around the house and in the office.
With exercise, it’s all about good quality exercise routines and being mindful as to what suits your body and stress levels at the time. More low impact workouts will make a massive comeback including walking, Pilates and yoga. It’s all about incorporating movement into your daily life.
There is no doubt as we say goodbye to 2018 and start thinking about our resolutions for 2019, we will be seeing a strong trend for more vegetable and even other plant-based foods. As well as being good for us (it really is true), trends toward more vegetable and plant-based food plans are only going to get stronger as people seek to improve their health and well-being.
We will also start using these foods in a more ethical and sustainable way. Zero-waste will translate to our food preparation as well as our plates. It will be exciting to see how we can use more parts of plant foods than we have before. Will we be chopping up the leaves on our cauliflowers and stalks on our carrots to add to our stir-fries? Let 2019 be your Year of the Veggie!
We spend too much of our time indoors, and I believe health comes from being in nature. I feel we’ll see a bigger push to get people outside, in the sun, under a tree, shoes off, soaking up the world they live in.
When it comes to nutrition, this one is simple – just eat real food. What I mean by that is eat food that you cook, eat food that grows in the ground, lives on the land or swims in the sea. Don’t eat food out of a pack, don’t eat food that arrives in a box or comes on the back of a motorbike.
Lastly, it’s all about mental health and should always be about mental health. We need to open the conversation further.
I think gut health will determine many of the food and diet trends for 2019. Probiotic and prebiotic foods will remain popular, and we will likely see more of these food products enter the market. Consumers will become more aware of how their diet affects their gut and how their gut health and gut microbiome impacts other areas of their health and wellbeing.
The range of products suitable for people with allergies and intolerances will likely continue to grow, including gluten-free, lactose-free, FODMAP friendly and so on. I expect plant-based (vegan) diets will also continue to be popular with more recipes and food products being tailored accordingly.
I think from a fitness point of view, there will be a really strong emphasis on community and culture. Gone are the days of you being a number. In fact, I think if you want to survive in the fitness space, you’re going to have to go the extra mile to retain clients.
With nutrition, there’s big interest in probiotic foods and gut health, and that will be a big trend in 2019. The kombucha-style drinks have got a lot of traction this year, so I think it will continue into next year too.
I think we’ll see more fitness trackers and wearable technology in 2019. There has been a dramatic increase in this type of technology which can be used to motivate people to be more active. Being able to measure your daily routine with real-time feedback means that you can begin to understand what you need to do to achieve your own health and wellbeing goals.
I believe that the keto diet and intermittent fasting will continue to trend in 2019. While I believe these diets have great research behind them and work for some, at JSHealth, we believe the healthy life should be all about balance, because that’s what can be sustained long-term. These diets are hard to follow after three to six months and usually the ‘results’ we gain from them, fall away shortly after ending the diet.
It’s time to throw out the scales, give up calorie counting and renounce diets – once and for all. It’s not about quick fixes or fads; it’s about adopting a sustainable lifestyle that supports wellbeing. Gone are the days of gruelling fitness regimes and restricting our food intake. In the new era of wellness, it’s all about treating our bodies with love, care and respect.
Trends will come and go and from a sports performance perspective, it is important to try and control the controllable and focus on aspects that are sustainable. Here at the Blues, these aspects are sleep, nutrition and exercise.
Sleep is very important for mental restoration and a vital component for muscle repair and growth. A balanced diet consisting of a variety of foods will always beat a fad diet in the long run. Daily exercise, whether it be walking, running, weight training, or group exercise classes all help with improving your health and wellbeing.
At the end of the day there is no magic cure and being consistent is key to living a healthy lifestyle.
