If you have a major injury or life threatening illness, call 000 or go to a Hospital Emergency Department immediately. For example: chest pain, unconscious or seizure, difficulty breathing, badly bleeding or injured in a severe accident.

Always take your membership card and photo ID when accessing health care services.

The Australian healthcare system can be broken up into two different categories:

1. Public: the public health system (known as Medicare) is only available to citizens, permanent residents and reciprocal card holders.
2. Private: the private health system (which nib is part of) will cover you for both emergency and non-emergency health issues, including things like treatment in a private hospital, the cost of an ambulance and a visit to the dentist.
