How to plan NDIS supports over the holiday season

The holiday season is a time to relax, connect and enjoy, but it can also bring changes to your usual routine. If you’re an NDIS participant or someone who supports one, a little planning can help make the festive season smoother and less stressful.
Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind as you prepare for Christmas and New Year.
1. Check in with your providers early
Many support workers, therapists and service providers take time off over the holidays. It’s a good idea to check in with them early (ideally by the start of December) to confirm their availability. Ask:
Will they be open over Christmas and New Year?
Are there any changes to your regular appointments or support hours?
Who can you contact if you need help during this time?
If your usual provider is taking a break, they may be able to suggest a backup or help you plan other options.
2. Review your support needs and plan budget
Think about what supports you’ll need over the break. This might include:
Help with daily activities
Transport to events or appointments
Support for social outings or family gatherings
Respite care if your usual carer is taking a break
A plan manager like nib Thrive can help you review your NDIS budget to make sure you’re on track and using your funds in line with your goals. It’s also a good time to check if any services you’re booking charge public holiday rates, which may affect your spending.
3. Book services early
December is a busy time for many providers, so try to book any essential services as early as possible. This includes support workers, allied health appointments, transport, or short-term accommodation. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to get the times and people you prefer.
4. Keep routines where you can
The holidays can disrupt regular routines, which can be tricky for some people. Try to keep some structure in place, like regular mealtimes, sleep schedules and familiar activities. If you’re travelling or having visitors, talk through the changes ahead of time and make a plan together.
5. Look after yourself
Whether you’re living with disability or supporting someone who is, it’s important to look after your own wellbeing too. That might mean:
Taking short breaks when you can
Asking for help from friends or family
Making time for things you enjoy
Remember, it’s okay to set boundaries and say no to things that feel too much.
6. Know where to go for help
Even during the holidays, support is still available. If you need urgent help, you can contact:
NDIS National Contact Centre: 1800 800 110 (closed on public holidays)
Carer Gateway: 1800 422 737 – for carer support and advice
Lifeline: 13 11 14 – for mental health support 24/7
You can also check with your local area coordinator (LAC) or support coordinator for more personalised advice. With a bit of planning, the holiday season can be a time to enjoy, recharge and feel supported - whatever that looks like for you.
