Know what supports are covered by the NDIS
Find out which supports are or are not covered by the NDIS, so you can make sure your funding is covered.
NDIS supports are the services, items and equipment related to a participant's disability that the NDIS agrees to fund.
For something to be covered, it must:
Be listed as an approved support and
Be considered reasonable and necessary.
NDIS support list
The NDIS funds a range of approved supports, including, but not limited to:
Assistive technology
Assistance with travel and transport
Early intervention supports for early childhood
Supports that the NDIS cannot fund include, but are not limited to:
Food and groceries
Clothing or beauty services
Health-related services.
Reasonable and necessary supports
The NDIS can fund a support if it is considered reasonable and necessary to help a participant pursue their goals, improve their independence and engage in the community - as long as it is related to their disability.
Under this guidance, funded supports must:
Be for an impairment that meets the disability or early intervention NDIS requirements, or both
Help with your individual goals and aspirations
Support your social participation and/or economic opportunities
Be value for money, meaning:
Its cost is the same or cheaper than alternative options that might have the same effect for the participant
It is likely to reduce the costs of funding for other supports in the long-term
Be effective and beneficial
Help maintain your informal supports (friends, family and community supports).
More information about these criteria is available on the NDIS website.
