nib foundation supporting sick kids and their families across Northern NSW

We are proud to have partnered with Ronald McDonald House Newcastle to support families with seriously ill or injured children.

nib foundation is proud to have partnered with Ronald McDonald House Newcastle to support families with seriously ill or injured children.
Through our People's Choice vote Ronald McDonald House was voted top beneficiary by over 19,000 of nib members, shareholders and employees, receiving funds to revitalise the private outdoor spaces of six self-contained units at the House. These spaces now serve as a ‘home away from home’ for many families of children requiring vital care.
Since opening in April 1991, Ronald McDonald House Newcastle have supported over 10,000 people, helping families stay close to their child in hospital. The funding from nib foundation helped enhance the unit gardens with new pathways, greenery, privacy screens and relaxation zones. These improvements have extended the private spaces for families, especially those who need to isolate due to their child being immunosuppressed.
To celebrate the completion of the revitalised spaces, nib staff recently volunteered their time to put the finishing touches on the gardens. With many families traveling from rural and remote communities, these new outdoor spaces will make a meaningful impact to their stay and experience, offering moments of calm, and connection, during an incredibly challenging time.
Staff at the house have seen firsthand how common interests like gardening bring families together and foster a sense of normalcy in a time of turmoil. Time spent in nature has been shown to reduce negative emotions and offers a gentle boost to families navigating uncertainty.
In addition to the garden renewal, nib foundation also contributed funding to help Ronald McDonald House recover from the pandemic and rebuild its vital volunteer base. Over the past two years, this support has helped to double the number of families with sick kids who are supported in the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at hospitals in Newcastle and Gosford. The funding was also able to assist with the refurbishment of two of the self-contained units at the House, giving them a much-needed refresh after fifteen years of wear and tear.
Together, these initiatives reflect nib foundation’s commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of people in our community. It’s been a privilege working alongside Ronald McDonald House to enhance the experience and care of families with sick children.
