Partnering to be BodyKind with Butterfly Foundation

Celebrating our partnership helping young Australians feel seen, heard, and supported in their journey toward positive body image

For five years nib foundation and the Butterfly Foundation have partnered to help address the body image issues faced by young Australians. This started with BodyKind Families, a resource hub for parents to understand how they can model positive attitudes and behaviors towards food and physical activity to support their children’s developing body image. nib foundation then supported Butterfly Foundation to introduce the BodyKind Youth Survey, the first large-scale survey in Australia to focus on young people’s body image experiences. The partnership aimed to give young Australians a voice on body image, its impact on their everyday lives and the support they would like to see.
Now the BodyKind Youth Survey is in its third year of filling the gap in understanding the needs of young people in relation to body image. This is important because body image issues can impact negatively on physical and mental health and increase the risk of disordered eating and eating disorders.
Findings from the 2024 survey confirm the prevalence of this issue with:
90% of young people reported some level of concern about their body image
75.5% of young people wished they were leaner/thinner
57.2% reported social media made them feel dissatisfied about their body
These results and other insights from the survey are informing Butterfly’s prevention programs and resources to support body image, and their advocacy work to engage government, schools and communities to better support young people.
This partnership has enabled Butterfly to enhance their prevention work so that young people can access relevant support and know that they are not alone in their struggles with body image.
We’re proud to have funded the BodyKind Youth Survey, supporting Butterfly’s mission to create safer, more inclusive environments for all young people in all bodies. Learn more and explore this year’s insights at Butterfly Foundation, opens in a new tab.
