The issue

Eight Australians take their life every day, and of the eight, six are men. In addition, 82 men call emergency services each day facing a mental health crisis.
Adding to these startling statistics is the fact men are considered to be at greatest risk of suicide but least likely to seek help with an estimated 72% of men not seeking professional help for mental health issues.

The project

The Banksia Project’s Growth Rooms offer free supportive programs. backed by mental health professionals, which provide men across Australia with regular, judgement-free environments to connect with like-minded peers, share experiences and work through daily challenges with valuable lifestyle tips.

With nib foundation’s support, the Banksia Project will be able to continue to run its extremely successful Virtual Growth Rooms program online, helping to empower, connect and support more people nationally.

A volunteer training program will be rolled out to 40 new volunteer facilitators and 10 support programs will be held for around 100 men during the year.

The impact

The additional Virtual Growth Rooms and programs will facilitate more avenues for men to seek free support, particularly those living in rural locations where they may have limited access to services.

By increasing factors such as social connection, purpose, happiness and resilience, the project will help even more Australian men during the early stages of their journey towards mental wellbeing, which will ultimately reduce suicide rates, supporting men to live happier, healthier lives.
