Apart from my passport what documents should I carry overseas?
There are a number of documents you may need when travelling overseas, some include visa, travel insurance policy, flight & accommodation bookings, emergency contact info. Here are just some of the main documents you may need:
Visa(s) for your destination: e.g. travelling to China for business requires a pre-approved visa. Arriving without one can result in denied entry.
International Driving Permit (IDP): Required in many countries if you plan to drive, e.g. renting a car in Italy without an IDP can result in fines or refusal to rent
Flight tickets / boarding passes: Either printed or digital copies. Example: At check-in, you’ll need your ticket and passport. If your phone dies, a printed copy can save the day.
Accommodation and tour bookings: Confirmation emails or printed copies. Example: At immigration in Japan, you may be asked to show proof of accommodation.
Photocopies of important documents: Copies of your passport, visa, insurance, and bookings. Example: If your passport is lost in Vienna, having a copy helps expedite replacement and identification.
Vaccination certificates (if required): Some countries require proof of vaccinations (e.g., Yellow Fever, COVID-19). Example: Travelling to Kenya may require a Yellow Fever certificate.
Consent documents for children: If travelling with children, especially solo, you may need custody documents or consent letters. Example: A parent travelling alone with a child to the U.S. may be asked to show a notarised consent letter from the other parent.
SmartTraveller registration: Optional but recommended. Helps the government assist you in emergencies. Example: During a natural disaster in Thailand, registered Australians were contacted and assisted by consular staff.
Driver’s licence or photo ID: Useful for identification, especially domestically or for car rentals. Example: Booking into a hotel in the UK may require a secondary ID.
