Ever wondered where NRL legend Paul Harragon likes to travel? Wonder no more. We tapped Paul on the shoulder and chatted about some of his favourite holidays with the family, his wife Pam and of course the boys.

The Check Up (TCU): Paul, we know you’re a big family man, let’s start by hearing about your favourite family holiday.

Paul: We’ve been lucky to do quite a bit of travelling as a family, but I think our all-round favourite destination is Crescent Head on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. I grew up going on holidays there as a kid and now my kids have as well. I love it because it’s simple, laid-back and can produce a world-class surf break.

TCU: Would you say your Crescent Head adventures are your most memorable holidays with the family?

Paul: I think a favourite trip was to Portugal together as a family to see Pam’s grandmother. She lives in the Algarve which is a beautiful part of Portugal with amazing beaches – it’s a popular tourist location.

It was really nice to get caught up in the Portuguese way of life, as it’s all about living in the now and enjoying yourself. Lots of fresh food, a little bit of dancing, siestas… who wouldn't like it!

TCU: Well said Paul, and so special for your wife Pam. You’ve shared 23 amazing years together; tell us about your most special getaway as a couple.

Paul: Well I’m sure my wife Pam will not agree with me, but I enjoyed our adventure trips the most – New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Katoomba in the Blue Mountains.

All of them had a little bit of a challenge along the way. For instance, in New Zealand there was an avalanche that engulfed the track, but we managed to get through.

In Katoomba, there was a freakish snow storm making it impossible to find the track, which meant we got lost and nearly had to stay overnight with no shelter.

Our Papua New Guinea trip saw Pam experience a bit of anxiety before we left – and we both got a little crook on the way – but like the other two trips, all the challenges just made it even more memorable. I love that stuff!

TCU: Now we’re sure your background has opened up many opportunities for travelling with the boys, so what would you say have been the best trips with your mates?

Paul: I’ve been on trips with large groups of mates to Mexico, Hawaii, Las Vegas, India, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and England, but recently I went on a trip to Kathmandu to take on Everest Base Camp and it was amazing. The people I was with and the scenery around me were equally incredible.

Paul: At the moment I’d like to see Van Morrison play in Ireland and if I could time it, go a little closer to the Arctic Circle and see the Northern Lights.
