You can’t beat a date night at the cinema or a movie night at home with your crew, but we all know that avoiding the buttery popcorn, choccies, chips and ice-creams can be harder than Zac Efron’s abs.

So, before you spend half of your monthly pay-check on a litre of frozen Coke and family-size packet of Maltesers, check out some of these healthy recipes and make your own cinema snack pack.

1. Coconut and choc blender brownies

How do gooey, fudgy chocolate brownies sound? Believe it or not, these delicious treats contain no refined sugar, gluten or dairy – and they’re full of healthy fats to give your skin a glow. The only hard part is trying not to finish your entire stash before the previews finish.

2. Roasted chickpeas

Chickpeas are one of the most versatile healthy snacks around – whether you prefer savoury (garlic parmesan), spicy (chilli) or sweet (maple cinnamon), there’s a roasted chickpea recipe to suit you.

Chickpeas are high in protein, fibre, zinc and folate, so you’ll get more bang for your vitamin buck with every bite.

3. Homemade popcorn

Can’t stand the thought of watching a film without a bag of popcorn? Switch out the overpriced, buttery movie popcorn and bring your own. Try playing with healthy combinations like curry chipotle and rosemary parmesan, for a homemade treat that's jam-packed with flavour.

4. Next level trail mix

You’ve probably tried traditional trail mixes before – a blend of nuts, seeds and dried fruit – but, it’s time to seriously up your trail-game. Consider adding in some small cubes of cheese, beef jerky or salami. The combination of meat, cheese, fruit and nuts is like a pizza in your mouth.

5. Peanut butter fudge

6. Vegan sushi

There’s no need to spend up big at the local sushi takeaway store when it’s so easy and cheap (when avocados aren’t the price of a small European car) to make yourself. Homemade sushi is also a great way to up your intake of veggies – simply throw in some extra carrot, capsicum and cucumber for an extra vitamin boost.

7. Chickpea cookie dough

Spoon lickers, unite – this recipe is for you. This raw chickpea cookie dough will take you less than 10 minutes to make and once you get the base sorted, you can get as creative with the add-ons as you like (for a healthier option, add in cacao and blueberries for a choc-berry hit).
