This information is for the 2023/2024 financial year and applicable to Australian residents only. You can access statements and information for previous years by logging in to your member account.

How your private health cover helps you at tax time

Private health insurance could help you save come tax time. If you earn more than $93,000 as a single or $186,000 as a family, having private hospital cover can not only help you avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge, but also give you access to the Australian Government’s rebate.

Understanding your tax statement

To help make tax time a bit easier, a Private Health Insurance Statement is no longer required to complete your tax return. This information is available when you select the pre-fill option when completing your tax return online. If you use a tax agent to complete your tax return, they can also access this information.

A Private Health Insurance Statement is only required when your policy details have not been pre-filled or if you use a paper tax return.

When will your statement be available?

Your Private Health Insurance Statement will be available to download from your member account by mid July each year.

What if you still want your Private Health Insurance Statement sent to you?

If you would like to have your 2022/2023 statement sent to you, please call us on 13 16 42 and a member of our team will be able to assist you.

What does your statement include?

Your Private Health Insurance Statement outlines:

  • The premiums you have paid to nib during the financial year that are eligible for the Australian Government Rebate

  • Your rebate amount during the financial year

If you are the policyholder, your statement will outline the details of any other adults who were on your policy at any point during the financial year. They will be listed as "Other adult beneficiaries". If you were covered on someone else's policy (for example, your partner's) your statement will also show their details. The statement also tells you the number of days you had an appropriate level of Private Patient Hospital cover during the financial year (refer to label A on your statement). This will help you see if you have to pay an extra Medicare Levy Surcharge.

What do you do if your statement is incorrect?

If you think that your statement may contain incorrect or out of date information, please contact us

What if you didn’t have Hospital cover for the full year?

If you didn't have an appropriate level of Private Patient Hospital cover throughout the financial year, you or your tax agent can calculate the extra Medicare Levy amount.

What do you have to do?

If you do your tax online or through an accountant, you don’t need to do anything! We are required to send details of your private health insurance policy off to the ATO, so your private health insurance rebate details will automatically be uploaded for you. If you choose to lodge a paper tax return, you'll need your Private Health Insurance Statement. For help on what sections you’ll need your statement for, visit the ATO website.

Will you receive a Lifetime Health Cover Statement as well?

Previously you may have received a Lifetime Health Cover Statement from us. This information has now been combined with additional information on a Policy Statement, which you will receive from us if required.
