Make the most of your work-related travel

Travelling for work isn’t much fun if you choose to sit your hotel room and watch telly while ordering up room service. Use the time to expand your horizons while overcoming the boredom and loneliness.

Feeling a little sore from long-distance travel? nib’s Extras policies include benefits for remedial massage.

Try something new. Whether it sampling the local delicacy or trying your hand at a new sport, make the most of the opportunity to experience something out of your normal range.

Explore. You're in a new place – go see it. Sightsee, take a stroll, and learn as much as you can about where you're finding yourself now.

Network and have fun doing it. Phone up friends, family and colleagues in the area and get together for an outing. Visit the local branch of an organisation you belong to or attend a meeting on a subject of interest.

Enjoy some me-time. Read that book that's been sitting on the shelf, see a movie or show, meditate, write in your journal, get a massage or just catch up on some sleep.

Exercise. Find out about exercise facilities at or near the hotel where you will be staying. Remember to pack exercise clothes.

Shop. Look for mementoes or thoughtful things for family and friends to show them that you were thinking about them while away.

Speak the lingo. If you're in a foreign country, take your phrase book and get your tongue around a few foreign words, including slang. Don't be discouraged if people look at you funnily; most will appreciate the fact that you're trying.

Phone or email home. When loneliness creeps up, pick up the phone and give your loved ones a call. If you're in a different time zone, fax or email.

Take keepsakes. Many seasoned travelers pack items to personalize their hotel rooms, such as scented candles, a special pillow and framed photos.
