While it's great to cut loose and party at Christmas time, throwing caution to the wind isn’t such a good idea when it comes to your health and wellbeing. Here are a few ideas to keep you looking and feeling good. Have you got the right level of health insurance? Call nib on 13 14 63 to chat about your level of cover, or to find out which of nib’s health insurance covers best suit you.

  • Don’t overdo it. Aim to leave an event while you can still remember your own name and what day it is. A clear head and a comfortably full stomach bode well for another round of partying tomorrow.

  • Drink smart. At each event, give yourself a limit – say, 3 glasses of champagne - and stick to it. And don’t mix drinks if you want to avoid a massive hangover. Alternate drinks – for example, one mineral water then one champagne.

  • Nibble wisely. Avoid canapés with a high fat content and only have a couple of them – they are, after all, supposed to be a precursor to the main meal, not a meal in themselves. Skip a course. Skip the entree or choose two entrees instead of an entrée and a main.

  • Think of others. If you're doing the catering, make sure there are low-fat options, non-alcoholic drinks and light salads on offer.

  • Remember your own health. If you have a medical condition such as diabetes or coeliac disease, don’t decide to give yourself a Christmas present of eating anything you want: you know you'll pay for it later! Allow yourself a few special treats but do place a limit on them. Take the time to find festive dishes and drinks you can enjoy too, so you don’t feel like you're missing out.

  • Maintain your exercise regime. If your social calendar is too packed for your normal gym routine, go for a quick lunchtime walk instead. Start exercising. All those extra Christmas calories are a good incentive to get moving.
