So you are thinking about taking out health insurance with nib – that’s great news.
When you switch to nib from another health fund, we’ll give you continuity of cover which means you should be able to start claiming on your nib health insurance immediately when you join. We’ll waive the waiting periods that usually apply to new customers so you can start getting the most out of your new nib health cover straight away.
To start claiming immediately, just make sure:
- your new nib health insurance includes services currently available to you;
- you’ve served all the required waiting periods with your current health fund;
- you haven’t used all your annual benefits with your current health fund; and
- you have completed the Clearance/Cancellation Certificate request.
If your new nib health insurance policy includes services that are not covered by your current policy you may need to serve a waiting period before you will be able to claim on these services with nib. For example, if major dental is included in your new nib policy but was not previously covered you may need to serve a waiting period before you can make a claim.
There are some things to remember when joining nib from another fund:
- If you have cancelled your health insurance policy with another health fund, you will need to join nib within 59 days to make sure you receive continuity of cover.
- If you have used part or all of your annual benefits with your current health fund, nib will adjust your benefits accordingly.
- Unfortunately any accumulated benefits and loyalty bonuses from your current health fund are not transferable to your nib health insurance.

3) Complete the Clearance/Cancellation Certificate request. We’ll contact your existing health fund to:
- Cancel your existing health insurance policy; and
- Obtain details of your existing policy so that we can give you continuity of cover for services covered by your new nib health insurance.
