Finished full-time study?

Take out your own nib health cover and receive continuous cover

As a graduate you may no longer be covered by your parent’s health insurance policy from 1 April 2010.

At nib we want to take the hassle out of health insurance and make it easy for new graduates like you to choose the right health insurance policy for your needs.

Take out your own nib health cover and receive continuous cover

If you take out your own health cover policy with nib you may receive continuous cover, so you may not have to re-serve any waiting periods and can start using your health insurance immediately.  For example, if optical was covered by your family policy and you choose a policy that also includes optical, you most likely won't have to wait the usual 6 months new customers must wait to claim on new glasses and contact lense

To receive continuous cover just make sure:

      • the health cover you choose is equal to or lesser than your parent's  cover (you will need to serve any waiting periods for higher benefits)
      • your policy is backdated to start 1 April 2011 (when you came off your parent's cover)

Still Studying? Student Dependant? Unsure? Here’s how to check

As a student dependant, you’re usually covered by your parent’s health insurance policy. If you’re unsure whether you are a student dependant, here’s an easy way to check.

A student dependant is:

      • single (this means you can't be married or in a defacto relationship)
      • in full-time study (unfortunately part-time study not covered); and
      • aged between 21 and 25 (you're covered under your parent's health insurance until your 21st birthday even if you aren't studying)
If this is you, then you should be covered under your family’s health insurance policy, whether it’s with nib or any other health insurance provider.

How to register as a Student Dependent with nib

You'll need to complete and return a Student Dependant Registration Form (your parents should have received one in February). Alternatively, you can download the registration form here.

For more information about choosing the right health insurance to suit you, or to check your student dependant eligibility, call us on 13 14 63.

Pay your premiums by Direct Debit from your bank, building society, credit union cheque or savings account and we'll give you up to 4% discount off the cost of your premiums (not available for Ambulance Only cover).
